Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge in our mouth. Their emergence might be completed smoothly, but very often there are complications which cause serious problems. Such complications include impacted wisdom teeth, i.e. wisdom teeth that remain inside the bone or are covered by soft tissue, or partially impacted wisdom teeth, i.e. wisdom teeth that have only partially emerged in the mouth. Usually, partially impacted wisdom teeth pose a greater issue, because they may lead to an inflammation called pericoronitis which is caused by the retention of food and microbes in the area between the tooth and the gum
surrounding it. This is a painful condition which presents flare-ups and remission and is the main indication for the extraction of wisdom teeth.
Another reason which renders their extraction necessary is their abnormal position. They may damage adjacent teeth due to the pressure they apply on them, cause damage of the jaw bone, while when they have only partially emerged or when they have emerged unevenly, cleaning the area is difficult and as a result there is increased risk of dental caries. Wisdom teeth can also be extracted as a preventive measure, so that we can avoid possible future problems. The procedure is performed surgically with local anesthesia. We will give you precise instructions, so that you heal as fast as possible and without complications.
Periapical cyst is a chronic inflammation of the periapical tissues, i.e. the tissues surrounding the apex of the root inside the bone. It is characterized by the formation of a cavity inside the bone where the apex of the root ends and it contains fluid. Periapical cyst is caused by various microbes which, after infecting the tooth, advanced through the root of the tooth to the apex. As long as the pathologic cause remains, the cyst can grow and cause bone damage. This condition is treated conservatively or by endodontic treatment, but if the cyst
persists, we remove it surgically.
