Endodontic treatment, i.e. What is often called “root canal”, is a treatment we perform when
the pulp inside the tooth is infected. The pulp is a chamber of soft tissue in the center of the
tooth which can be infected due to extensive dental caries which have penetrated the
enamel and dentin.
Also, this chamber can be infected due to a fracture or injury which allows microbes to enter.
During the procedure, we fully extract the pulp, we clean and disinfect the pulp chamber
and the root canals, which are filled with special materials. Finally, we substitute the missing part of the crown with a filling, so that the tooth can regain its appearance and functionality. Depending on the tooth’s condition, we may have to cover it with a crown in order to protect it from possible fractures.
Endodontic treatment allows us to save a tooth which would otherwise have to be extracted and in this way retain natural teeth which have sustained serious damage for many more
years.
The procedure is painless, since it is performed under local anesthesia. Several visits might be needed for the infection inside and around the tooth to be eliminated, before the tooth can be filled and restored. Any ailments following the treatment are usually managed with common analgesics.
